The Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation is always looking for volunteers to help with upcoming adoption events. Volunteers are asked to please contact our volunteer coordinator before attending an event. PetsMart Adoption Events begin at 10:00 am with setting up our table and crates and putting the sign out front. Our dogs arrive at 10:30 and then the real fun begins. As a volunteer at our adoption event, it's not just walking the dogs (though that is a part of it)

While at adoption events, our volunteers serve in the invaluable role of helping to socialize our pups. Whether they are meeting new dogs or all different types of people, this experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Each positive interaction with people and other pups help this dog to become a better canine citizen. Even if the dog doesn't find a home that day, the experience helps to prepare them for when they DO find their forever home. During the day we also work on basic obedience behavior with the dogs.

Many times people will comment that they could not "do this" because it would be too hard to send the animals back to the shelter. While some days are better than others, I find comfort in knowing that even for a few hours, I am making the world a better place for a handful of the animals who need it most.
